"Green Airport": Salvador Bahia Airport gets international recognition in sustainability

Effluent Treatment Plant, Energy Efficiency and Wildlife Management Projects stood out in Latin America

The environmental commitment of Salvador Bahia Airport, part of VINCI Airports network, has just been recognized internationally once again. The Effluent Treatment Plant (ETE), the efforts aiming energy efficiency and the wildlife risk management projects at the Bahian airport are featured in the 2019 edition of the “ACI-LAC Green Airport Recognition”.

The award is aimed at sustainable airport initiatives and takes place during an annual conference of the International Council of Airports of Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), October 21-23, in Bogota, Colombia. Salvador Bahia Airport is represented by Mr. Henrique Bellini, recently chosen “Young Airport Professional 2019” by the same Council.

This is the second international recognition related to sustainability achieved by Salvador Bahia Airport. In January 2019, the Airport was the first of the North / Northeast regions and the second in Brazil to obtain ACA (Airport Carbon Accreditation) certification in its first level. The honor is granted by the International Council of International Airport (ACI), which evaluates the work towards reduction of greenhouse gases generated by airports.

ETE – Implemented in 2018, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETE) with 99.5% efficiency allowed the adoption of water reuse. Today, the water treated is redirected to the ongoing construction works at the Airport, gardening, toilets, fire brigade activities and cooling towers.

Energy efficiency – Salvador Bahia Airport has already replaced more than 1200 conventional light bulbs for LED lamps. The change caused energy consumption reduction with lighting by 30%. In addition to that, more efficient elevators and escalators were installed at the Terminal.

Wildlife management – Compared to 2017, the management work carried out in 2018 reduced the number of bird collisions with aircraft damage by 80%, what made the Airport safer and contributed to the preservation of local biodiversity.
